Avensi Wave: Creating New Waves in the Coffee Experience

Hey there, Johnny here! Co-founder & Product Designer of ICOSA Brewhouse.

I’m excited to share a rare glimpse behind the scenes of what went into creating Avensi Wave–our most challenging & ambitious product we’ve ever developed.

It introduces a unique cup architecture that has never been successfully executed in the history of drink ware design (until now). There’s nothing similar due to the complexity of manufacturing and steps required to make this one of a kind design.

But what compelled us to take on this unique challenge?...

It actually started with you! Over a year ago, we sent out product feedback surveys to ask what our community wanted us to create next, and the answer was... Espresso Cups!

That led us to ask ourselves the question: “How do we create something that no one has ever done before?”

I began with pen to paper, and sketched different concepts for an organic looking cup design that could create larger waves in your cup as you swirl.

Larger waves = more surface area = more aroma & flavor.

I thought about how the gentle sloping ramps at skate parks and ski slopes efficiently accelerate people, but can the same be done for coffee?

Dozens of sketches later, the ‘wave ramp’ concept was born (Image 1, at the top).

I sketched those ‘wave ramps’ into a cup and then 3D printed it to create the first prototypes of a ‘single-directional wave ramp’ (Images 2 & 3).

But I realized that this would only work for people who swirl in one direction...

So I created a design that was inclusive and allows you to swirl in both direction (clockwise and counter-clockwise)–it’s what I called the ‘bi-directional wave ramps’.

This shape was completely novel for vessel design and looked REALLY COOL! But there was one interesting side effect...As I swirled liquid in the cup with the bi-directional wave ramps, it created micro-bubbles! (also known as: aeration!)

Bubbles... Aeration...

In wine and whiskey, aeration helps to develop and unlock the drink’s flavor, but does this also apply to coffee?

Find out in the next part of this special behind-the-scenes series!

Thanks again and talk soon!
